I think + or - 6-8 inches means you will be within 6-8 inches left or 6-8 right of your guidance line. To me that means you will have a 12-16 inch wide "path" that your guidance line will fall within. My experience here in my area is that it is within 12 inches(+ or - 6 inches) 95% of the time and it is usually much better than that. The exception is when it does like Lance said above, it will all of a sudden take a 1-2 foot jump and stay there for a while and then go back pretty close to where it was before the jump.
