Thought a LULL would be handy around shop. Tractorhouse is full of them. What brand is best? What are some things to look for?

I like the ones with manual controls over the electronic ones.

Telehandler, he's using LULL as the pet name for the tool in general, kinda like most people say Bush Hog even if it's a land pride lol!

Like this....

Lull is probably the oldest telehandler around. Don't know if they are still in business. As previous post said, just like asking for a Kleenex, when you want a facial tissue.

Agent Orange: Friendly fire that keeps on burning.

What sets a Lull apart from most of the other lift and place telescoping boom forklifts is their traversing boom assembly.
Here's my 10K # capacity, 54 footer. I think the machine weighs in the neighborhood of 35K #:
Lull

They are available with several different engines. Mine has a 6 cyl naturally aspirated JD diesel. Hydraulics are pilot controlled with no electronics involved. They have a very precise feel that isn't much affected by how much weight they're bearing.
Here's a shot of the machine with the boom all the way up:
lull

Even though it looks pretty mech the same as any other forklift at this point, there's another lever in a Lull that lets you hydraulically travers the entire boom assembly forward 7 feet without having to do the extend boom, lower boom, extend boom, lower routing to get your load exactly where it needs to be.
Pettibone lifts also have a traversing boom that is just enough different to get around Lull's patent.

Embarrass WI

I knew a guy who had an Ingersoll Rand and had a lot of electronics problems-it was only available to use about 1/2 the time. I have a New Holland LM850, it seems pretty solid but I'm not a big fan of the Perkins motor.

Some Gradall's are rear wheel steer only, maybe OK on a jobsite but not so handy around a farm.

Lulls seem to be fine, Manitou's have a good rep(some Gehl's are Manitous but not all). You see more than a few JCB's around here.

Like most things, the brand with good dealer support will have an edge.

I would feel REAL comfortable getting a Lull, 8K capacity works real good for any size job and can hold some weight out pretty far and still handle it well. Reaches like 30ft! Cummins motor, no electronics really to mess up. Selectable 4, 2, crab steer. I don't own one but have used one on a few occasions (Lull like I'm describing, about a 2000 model xxxx54 model number) and it is the bee's knee's!

Lull, JLG, Gradall and Skytrak are all owned/manufactured by JLG Industries, all are built a little differnt, just like when they were all indepentant, I have a 8042 Skytrak and it has been a good machine, it was an RSC rental's machine and I bought it off a PurpleWave Auction (and I even paid a buyers fee if you can beleive that) bought it right, either not a lot of people were watching it or there are a lot of people who refuse to buy on PurpleWave becuase of the buyers fee, but I just factored the buyers fee into my price I was willing to pay and bid.

Aw man! That one right there is ideal, the price is right too. Looks straight and pretty darn clean. That one has the exact same setup of the one I use except no outriggers. Same controls (like was said, all made by JLG) and they are very easy to get used to using. I think you nailed it with that find and like you said, not far away.

I have a Skytrak 5028 and use it nearly every day never thought there were so many uses. I bought it to resell but never put it on the market. Thing I like is all manual controls, 4 cyl Cummins, Ford C6 automatic transmission , how much simpler can you get. also rent it out once in a while, pays for itself.

Outriggers are not required until you get above 60% of the rated capacity of the machine. You would like the ability to set steering to a crab steer setting though. One needs to be cautious on hillside and on soft ground, the center of gravity gets real high very fast. Even loads at 30% of rating can cause a rollover due to the long boom extension.
