We got the the 32% knifed in and the furrows plowed for irrigation in the corn. It was allmost to wet to knife the 32% across the low ends of the fields when we ran it but the corn was beginning to grow so fast it was time to get it done. By the time we got the furrows plowed and polypipe laid it was time for a drink of water. We were a good two to three weeks behind getting planted compared to most of our neighbors. Most of the irrigated fields around here had allready been irrigated at least once before now.

I just don't see getting caught up happening any time soon. I have to get out of here shortly and go change water sets. First watering so that means poking holes. I have a wore out right wrist thats really giving me a fit.

Eastern VA. No such thing as too many Magnums.
I wish I could use poly pipe. Seems like it would be nice for odd shaped fields where the pivots can't reach. I don't think I could do it here since our land rolls just a little. Looks good.

Looks like good corn, what kind of yield would you expect for a "normal" year. It's getting pretty dry here in Iowa, I might wish I could irrigate soon.

We fertilize for 200 bu. I do hear of a good bit of 200 bu corn here. I don't really know exactly what to expect out of our crop. I tried corn in 98 and that was the worse year ever for corn here. That was the year we supposedly had bad alfatoxin. I had corn last year and the flood got it and it was to late to replant after the water left.

Paul I am a good two to three weeks behind most of my neighbors. I got a little behind getting fields ready and I had to wait for rain after getting bedded up before I could plant. I talked to a man the other day that was in a field working on a pivot down around Pine Bluff and he said he was seeing small ears.

We missed most of the rain tonight, but did pick up a renagade shower a while ago after the main line moved past. Think it rained more on my north farms, find out in the morning, wife had to hold me back from taking a midnight run to go see....lol

Reminds me of the good old days when we used to do similar with milo. We would wait for a rain in May or June and plant on the moisture. Then later we would run an International rolling cultivator with shovels on the back to make furrows. It was always hot, and the ground was starting to get hard. Did not look forward to stringing out the aluminum pipe. That always meant work. And once you started you had to stay with it.

milofarmer: There really wasn't anything good about the "good old days" was there besides the fact we were younger? I just hated stringing out pipe and it seemed to come at the same time that corn etc. needed to be cultivated too. Almost always hot and miserable when the pipe was laid out. I sold all of my pipe last year and hope I am never tempted again to gravity irrigate.
