Ironwood, MI Western most tip of U.P. | I got a call from a friend that wanted me to give him an idea on what an old 1980's farm tractor was worth. He is a member of the board for the local sewage plant. He said it was purchased new when they built the sewage plant in the mid 80's. They have a disk too. So I met him at the sewage plant yesterday. Well to say the least, I was shocked. It was anticipated when they bought it that the sewage sludge would be spread on the local old hay fields and the sewage plant would have to disk it in. Apparently they never really had to do it. SE Minnesota | Jeez.. that's quite a find. Why don't they auction it on the internet to see what that sucker would bring, rather than deal with just one dealer.

Bothwell ont | thought that tractor was for sale through tender bids ?? I bet it will bring anywhere from 50-60k ]how big is the disc??? they will get more out of it selling it out right than trading it.

sw corner ia. | I wonder if that disc has been attached all these years.. the collectors will go nuts over this.

Wow. 50k+, trading that thing to a dealer is definitely the wrong play.

Grand Island, Nebraska | Lots of discussion about this on redpowermagazine forum. Also thought it was being sold by sealed bid.

nc nebraska butte |
that thing will bring a lot of crap. Auction it tell us what it brings. 60-70000 would be my guess.
Edited by frank l 10/16/2013 09:37

SE Minnesota | I was going to say... there's gotta be more than one post about this thing on one forum.. That is one RARE bird.

Murfreesboro, Tennessee | $50K plus. That is indeed a rare find. Like others have said, I think I would auction it or sealed bid. Some collector would go nuts over that.

N MO | I suppose it is. But having to replace the rims would knock the value in my eyes. I think it would bring 40-50k.

UP of Michigan- North coast of USA | Auction would be best price, costs would be more. Sealed bids would be least cost. Not your typical yooper tractor. Usually they are pretty beat.

When you're looking at a virtually new 80's tractor.... rims and rubber wouldn't be a worry. Where else can you get a tractor these days with those hours and reasonably expect it to last thirty years? None of the late model junk is nearly as reliable as the older iron.

Southern Illinois | i would say doubtful

Grand Island, Nebraska | Highly doubt if any transmission work has been done. That was a fix as fail program, not mandatory. But we were instructed to update with the later components anytime we were in the transmission for any repair.

Whiskey, Tango, Foxtrot | upperMichigan - 10/16/2013 06:12 It told them they have the equivilent to the 67 corvette in grandma's garage with 1000 miles on it. I'm sorry, but I don't see it being anything like that. More like a 1984 AMC Eagle. It isn't old enough to be a collectors item, and it isn't new enough or big enough to be a highly sought after machine for most farms. It was made by a now defunct company, and parts are hard to get at best. I'm sure they were a fine machine in their day, but I was never really impressed by them compared to slightly newer machines that have a little more dealer support and some people who know how to work on them. I've got several old IH's around, and they are fine, but when something major goes wrong they more or less become parts. Even if parts are to be found, the guys who know how to work on them are now in their 70's or 80's, if they are still around. I could be dead wrong, and hopefully for you there are some collectors out there that want one, but for the $50,000+ people on here are talking, it would not be a usable machine.

. | Why would it not be a usable machine?? I've never heard of anyone who's had this series complain there are no parts or service. 50K is a heck of deal compared to the price of new.

Soutwest Ks. | When you look at what some of the lower hour 4440 tractors are bringing at auction I would imagine it would be at least worth $50,000. Certainly not to me but somebody with more money then sense. I just cannot believe what collectors will pay for low hour obsolete tractors.

SEON | Father came home with a very, very nice 3500 hr 7140 last spring....almost new Pirelli's all the way around plus matching snap on duals...$55,000. We dyno'd it at 205 - 210 IIRC. A 5088 isn't worth that IMO....not with that trans. Someone will pay it tho.

Columbia Basin, Ephrata, WA | I also thought comparing it to a 67 Corvette was a good bit of a stretch. There was a nearly new Chevy vega in that Nebraska auction. That's probably a more apt comparison.

The low hours is the selling point on that tractor. Can you imagine what a 4440 with that few hours would bring. Oh Man it would amaze you. That tractor is in nice condition it will bring excellent money.

ND | I had a 1997- 9330 4wd & no one in service dept knew how to work on it but reading the shop manuel, this tractor however nice would be doomed in most mid western CIH shops, hello big labor bill.

Whiskey, Tango, Foxtrot | 50k is a heck of deal compared to new, but it isn't new. It is a 30 year old tractor. That doesn't turn well, have a powershift, or any good dealer support (here anyway) or part availability. Even a tractor that was only driven by a little old lady to church on Sunday is going to have lots of age related issues. Can buy a nice 4455 or a higher houred 8xxx for that much money. I know what I'd rather have.

The Delta | Id bet its never farmed with, impractical for a farm. Much more practice for a man that owned one new and has retired to collecting. With matching disk skys the limit, many older farmers liked ih and almost everyone has owned one.

I thinks its pretty neat as is. For all the speculators what do you think it would be worth if taken apart and pieced out for salvage?

SW Minnesota | I assume the disk in in similar, not-hardly-used condition? Which brings up the second question - what's a nearly-new IH 20' 496 cushion gang disk worth?
