Carter Montana | Can I get by with a couple of galvanized fittings for a shop heater rather than black. Just need maybe a street L and a T. The internet has conflicting opinions on this.

Hagen Brothers farms,Goodrich ND | The zinc coating does not react well to propane. The chance of sluffed off zinc trash hanging a regulator or gas valve open makes for too much risk,

East Kansas, DeSoto | In my past it has even attacked some brass valves, not all. Must have had some impurities in them. Gifford Edited by Gifford 12/21/2010 16:36

Wallis, TX | Hmmmm, We used galvanized for years when dad sold propane. I thought maybe rules had changed so I called LP supplier and they use galvanized in their plumbing. I'm in TX , maybe the rules are different where you are.

What about aluminum and zinc die castings used in regulators and zinc plated hose stems crimped to propane hose?

East Central Arkansas | I was thinking it was natural gas it was a problem with. I am not saying to do it but I know where there is a 20' section of galvanized underground that was put in several years ago by a lp gas company and as far as I know there hasn't been any problems.

South Louisiana | My propane co. put galvanize pipe in at my grain bins 17 years ago. So far no problem. I dont know why but there are many setups in South La. that use galvanize pipe even in residential applications. Not saying it is good but it is done a lot down here.

Wallis, TX | Shouldn't be much difference between butane and propane in what they affect. I doubt you are getting butane anyway, most likely you are getting propane. I do know that some hoses labeled for natural gas would not work for LP. The LP would break down the rubber and cause seepage in the hose.

West Union, Illinois | YES ... sort of ... maybe. Unless a recent edition changed it the National Fuel Gas Code does not prohibit galvanized piping in gas installations. Yes, there is a concern about zinc flaking off, but no more of a concern than copper sulphite from reactions between impurities in the fuel and copper in the system. This is why you need a properly installed sediment trap (aka drip leg) before each appliance. And remember, this is NOT the way to install it: (sediment trap WRONG.jpg) Attachments ---------------- sediment trap WRONG.jpg (44KB - 870 downloads)
