Subject: my grain bin project from last weekend

humboldt iowa
well I thought I would share some pics of something I have never done before. My neighbor gave me a 18 ft butler grain bin. he said I could have it as long it was gone before harvest.
so I went to work got the foundation ready and what not (no pics of that the wife was busy). so I picked last Saturday to move the bin got some help lined up and borrowed some bin jacks and here was the result of allot of hard work. we started at 8 in he morning and had it on the new pad and anchored down by 8:30 that night.

how did you keep from bending the bottom edge of the bin on the trailer? reason i ask is i have a couple i may possibly move and thought about what you did but figured they would be ruined by the time i got them home.

We moved one the same way, ours was 7 rings high, moved it 3 mile, no power lines and went thru some fields. Bolted a piece of pipe across the bin in 2 places for support to keep it from collasping. Worked okay,

Just make sure that you pull it with a farm tractor. We moved a 27' bin 5 miles one time the same way, got half way home and got pulled over by a state trooper. He told dad that he needed over width permits to which dad replied that he didn't think that he needed them because he was using a farm tractor. He ended up sitting in his car for about 15 min. talking on the phone before he came back and apologized for pulling us over.

that wont work with the D.O.T. a grain bin in not classified as an implement of husbandry. I am required to purchase permits for every move in every county and a seperate permit for any state road from the state DOT. Also have to contact all utility companies before each move. We used to try and move the bins with a farm tractor thinking it would be legal. Got pulled over by the DOT, huge fine, shut down until we had a liscenced vehicle with a gvr rating of 10001 lb. DOT does not consider the brakes on a tractor adequete to pull an oversized load. I now use a semi for every move. 18 to 36 foot bins, tanks ect. Tired of fighting the DOT.
Nice pics tho, was wondering how to put pics on here, could you let me know how you did that? Thanks, Rusty

Usually there is an angle piece that bolts on the bottom ring when coemplete. We moved a bin a few years ago where we dropped a few rings off of the bottom then bolted the angle piece back on the bin and set it on the trailer. Kept the sheets from bending.
