Subject: Auger flow rates, how to figure??

Suver, Oregon
I am back to designing my new air seeder. Is there a formula for figuring the volume of material an auger will deliver per revolution? I assume I will need to know the diameter and the pitch, what else is involved? I am guessing the the material being delivered will have an effect as well.

Also, who carries a big selection of auger flighting?

Thanks,

One formula is: 32.2 divided by the number of seconds it takes to fill a 5 gal. bucket = number of bu. per minute the auger is putting out.

That's good to know, but I am do not have an auger yet, I am trying to figure out what size and pitch I need.

A starting point would be the area of the auger tube (piR2)minus the area of the actual screw (appriximately piR2 of the center tube, plus a little)  times the pitch to give you a theoretical capacity per revolution.  Reality is going to be less then that, but you'll have to guess at how much less.  I think the only way you are going to be able to find out what it's really going to deliver is to actually calibrate it like described above.

Garth, you might try either Northwest Diversified Mill Supply or West Coast Seed Mill Supply. I'm thinking that they probably sell the flighting and might be able to give some idea on the sizing. Seems like Shoup sells flighting too, but their shipping charges are probably cost prohibitive (we're at the wrong end of the country).

Subject: How do you balance the auger after replacing the flighting?

They say when you put on new flighting the auger needs to be balanced. Some times when I take out an auger I see some round weights welded on the flighting, sometimes not. I do some of my own steel work, but those who replace the flighting do not want to tell me how they balance the auger when they are done putting on the flighting. What is the secret?

Mostly, the flighting is balanced by using heat warp from the welding. The auger screw will bend toward the heat applied. Generally, start spot welding the flighting to the tube, turn the tube half a turn and weld the same amount. Not exactly rocket science. It is the nature of an auger to center itself in the load, so it wants to run straight. If it is built of adequate strength material.
I figure an auger will keep getting better for at least 15,000 bushels. That is, achieve a polish that will allow it to move more grain, pull easier.
The augers used in the paving machines built close, here, are turned true in a lathe. But they are about 16 inch diameter and 5/8 thick flighting.
