Subject: ditch bank mower recommendations?

Mid-Michigan
Our old sickle mower finally fell apart. I would like to keep our roadsides around each farmed mowed so I need a mower. The guys around here that are contracted by the county use discbines but they look so flimsy. I need to be able to now some rough stuff (occasionally some brush) so I think a discbine is out. The system I would love would be the system our county uses the has a hydraulic arm that reaches up and out about 16 feet. That system looks very expensive and looks like it would take two days to put on. I just saw an ad for a rear mounted Hardi. (I didn't know hardi made a mower). It looks basically like a mounted bush hog on an arm that slides for extra reach. It looks like a pretty good system. Anyone have a recommendation?

Hardi made one. We had one but finally wore it out. Bought a Bush Hog which looks almost identical to the Hardi. Both do the same job. Both are slow and work better in reverse. They are usually cheap at sales here. $500-1,000 will buy almost every one of them here.

Doesn't sound like you are too thrilled with them.

hard to get excited about running it. Who wants to go backwards all day trying to stay out of the ditch? I don't get real excited about mowing season at all really. Probably work on the 15' batwing, 7' bush hog and this ditch bank mower more than anything else throughout the year. They all go into self destruct mode soon as you pull the pto lever.

With good blades they will do a nice job. Can take down small trees and bushes with it also. Ours pulls in almost up against the tire on the tractor. Can't use duals with it if that gives you an idea how close it'll get.

Ours looks like this one. Bought it last winter for $1,000. http://www.tractorhouse.com/listingsdetail/detail.aspx?OHID=8043553...

I have one like Detroit linked to. For what I do with it I really like it. I mow ditch banks and around a small (about 2 acres) pond, including the levee. The "slide out" gives you about 3 extra feet of reach. I run it on a JD 4020 with no front weights and I wouldn't want it on anything smaller (especially lighter). If you give it time to do so it will cut anything up to 4 inches or so. Basically, if you can ride the tree over it will cut it. Of course, my previous experience is with a Woods pto drive of about the same size. It was pretty good but you couldn't run it at much over 45 degrees. I have run this one at 90 degrees. Just remember, my opinion is worth exactly what you are paying for it.

We have a hyd drive Woods 3pt ditch bank mower like you describe. Mainly use it to mow creek banks that we can't reach with our batwing. Works ok but is slow and like said works better in reverse. Takes a fair size tractor to ha dle the weight. We use a IH 806D with a loader for counter balance but there still can be a pucker factor at times.

How far will it reach outside of your tire? I don't have to go to fast (probably have 10 miles).

Tractor is set for 36" rows. Drawn in the inside edge of the mower is about 18-24" from the outside edge of the tire. Hyd cylinder moves it out another 24" or so . Deck will mow straight down or straight up. I usually mow in L1 or L-1TA

First year we had ours I ran it on the back of a IH 1206. Even with 1,000# of front end weights tractor was light on the front. For some reason the oil in the pto pump got hot causing the tractor's pto shaft to get hot & break. You could see the shaft was crystalized from the heat. That's one reason I run slow.

I have a Woods mechcanical drive mower versus the hydraulic version I wonder how the two types compare. It seems we are always fixing ours but it was wore out when I got it and we tend to try to cut too big of brush. Use a 4430 with aloader on it and it is about the right weight tractor. I would really like a hydfraulic drive boom mower but have heard alot of scary stries about them.

Our's was pretty well used when I bought it at a farm sale. WE had to weld up the deck where it had rusted thru at the front. 2nd yr I used it twisted off the main shaft in the gear box but it looked like it had been cracked for quite a will. Cost about $600 to replace. Only other thing was replacing a hyd hose the first yr. We've had it 4-5 yrs. Besides creek banks I use it to trim up limbs along fence rows. We bought a new Maxxum 115 & I want to put the ditch bank mower on it but am not aure if it's enough tractor weight wise. I'd like to have a boom mower as well but like you I have reservations on the "pucker" factor

I have tought about a 3pt boom mower but there are not any of them in my area and every mid mount one I have seen the right side of the tractor looked like it had been beaten on witha ballpean hammer. I really do not to wreck my tractor and don't want another tractor for just a mower on ly problay use it 50hrs a year.

Neighbor has a mid mount boom mower on a MF MFD tractor. IIRC, hew said it was built for a company that leased it out. It would be a major undertaking to remove the mower. Looks to have been built around the tractor. Large oil tank on the left side, lots of extra weights on the left side plus fluid in oversize tires, cage around the cab. . He said it will reach out 16' but tractor is really squirrlley with it out that far. He has a mower head & a brush head for it. Don't know what he gave for it but bet it was a pretty penny. Best bet IMO if you want one would be one that a state hwy dept puts up for auction.

I always thought the degelman side arm system looked interesting. It can be used with just about any trail type mower you already have and does not need a designated tractor. It hooks up to the tractor in about 5 minutes and about the same to put the mover on. Have no idea on price or how well it works but sure looks good and is nice and simple. There is video on the site and specs.

I mow ditches with a batwing. Neighbor rolled his tractor with a side mount 6' mower. He probably shouldn't have been in that area. Shook him up pretty good. Totaled the tractor.

What else's do you use a batwing for? I really have no need for the mower except roadsides (really would rather not roll my tractor though)

We have a hydraulic drive Woods ditchbank model also. Will reach out a couple feet from tractor ( plus cut width, 6' ,I think ). Have it on a 4000 Deere with liquid in tires. Does a good job slow. Nice thing is it will mow up or down with no driveline. Has a pto pump to run it ,with it's own reservoir.

I have a Woods hydraulic drive 6' also. I have it on an IH5488 and seems to handle it ok. I think it's fast enough but I don't try to mow real fast anyway.

So far I like this one, just got it this fall and granted, I haven't had the winter to clean up some stuff and run it like I wanted but it works good. We mow with a batwing practically non-stop in the summer and hope this will allow us to keep some gnarly field ditches in check.

Sorry, forgot to check back here. This is a Land Pride RCP2660, very nice unit that I lucked on to for a decent price. I had wanted one for years and anytime I found one they were always over $10,000 at least, I bought this one this fall in Virginia for $8,500.

Here's one...

Here is a relatively simple offset hitch that can be used with a small rotary mower and it is fully mounted on the three point. http://www.wikco.com/offsetcutter.html

Not sure what your ditches are like, but Im able to do most all of mine with a BushHog batwing....get what you can from top side....then drive down the center of the bottom of the ditch and the wings will reach up and get what you missed
