Subject: Unverferth wagon question

We have 3 Unverferth wagons and one of them the hitch needs to be adjusted up so its easier to hook up. I cannot find anything in the book and I don't see anyway to adjust the 2 springs underneath the hitch. Anyone else had this issue and found a fix? Thanks so much

I don't think there is any adjustment. We had the bracket that held the springs in place break and let's the springs lose tension and make the tounge very heavy.

Between Omaha and Des Moines, 7 miles South of I80

I don't have any advise, but I thought a picture might help. (I assume it is this style).

Edit: It does look like Dad's Brent 644 tongue, and I didn't see any adjustment when he bought that wagon, a couple years ago, either.

No adjustment, but I made my own. Lift the tongue way up and hold with a loader or forklift. Wedge a piece of flat stock (3/8 or 1/2") in between the spring and the bumper block. Spot weld the flat stock in place. Done this 2 years ago on our 2 oldest wagons. Works great.

If there is some age on the wagon, there might be some wear on the T pipe that the two springs slide on. I took mine off and welded any worn spots and then ground off the excess weld. Kind of hard to explain but improved my wagon's hitch a lot. Most of my welding was on the solid pipe that shows on both sides of the hitch, not on the hollow pipes that the springs slide on. Look for any wear, build it up with welder, grind it smooth, and that should help. Make sure both springs are not broken.

There is nothing in the book and Brent doesn't make anything for it. You will have to fabricate a spring system of your own (Im doing it right now). I can't believe that they couldn't have given us a way to adjust that tongue but no luck.

Any chance you could take a picture of that?

We have had good results with placing bushings or bearing lock collars on the cross shaft. Steve
