Subject: Zero turn mowers ?

East Central SD
I looked at a few mowers lately.... I've either gotta get something a heck of a lot faster than what I've got or fence off the yard and turn it over to a herd of goats!

I searched back and read a few reports from the past but was interested if anybody has been unhappy with the Hustler Super Z's. They are really heavy built - the only problem I see with them is the price. Looked at a rear discharge 72" - not supposed to windrow tall grass like a side discharge. Do they follow the contour of the ground good? Any report from owners would be appreciated. Kevin

Bought an EX Mark 60"@ 27 HP EFI, Kohler, last spring in an auction with 300 hours on it. I would not buy another. Its too jerky and is like a young colt. It wants to run like the wind. Too hard to feather control it. Also had a problem with the engine governor that obviously was messed up when the mower was new. The company or engine manufacturer would not warranty it. I will replace it with a single lever control Country Clipper.

Dad and I looked at every brand of mower at farm progress show and even tried out a hustler super Z. We both thought Kubota had the best mower just from our standpoint. This was a ZD21 with 60" deck. The exmark comes with high regards among those in lawncare that I have been around too. Super Z was a nice running mower too. Haven't bought yet.

I bought a bob-cat (not the same company that makes skidloaders) Fast Cat last spring and am overall happy. Its a 48" cut 19 horse machine, but you can go much faster on the smooth ground and around things that I didnt figure I needed much larger of a deck. Plenty of power out of the Kawasaki, and built well too. I'd reccommend. Right after I bought mine they came out with a 5 year 500 hour warranty for residential use, mine is really a commercial warranty, 2 years 2000 hours. I put 40 hours on it as dry as it was last year.

I got one too. Seems like it will be easy to work on, but not a bit of a problem after two years.

Bought an EX mark 280hrs with 56"deck with a kawasaki engine and couldn't be happier!! Not jerky at all. I can mow as fast as it will go and it does a VERY good job.

If the previous owner used it for 300hrs why would you think the manufacture should still warrenty it?

MSB is your steering dampners still good? They usually last over 300, but they will cause it to act like you describe.

I've got a 2005 Hustler Z with a 25 horse Kawasaki and a 60" deck. Love this mower, couldn't see buying any other. The only thing I've done to it is update the discharge opening by cutting it larger, which the factory recommended, and replace blades. It blows grass 10-12 feet now. Very heavy built mower. Do recommend the suspension seat, makes for a nice ride.

I bought a 2007 Hustler Z late last fall. Just mowed the grass with it a couple of times, but I think it is a heck of a mower.

After owning a Country Clipper for a year with the single joystick controller, I can't understand why anyone would want to give themselves a workout using dual steering levers. The larger Country Clippers have steering levers as an option if an arm workout is really what you want while you mow.

The CC I bought was a previous model year leftover and the price was too good to pass up, this is the time of year to find those kind of deals (I bought mine in January) because everyone is getting in their new stuff for spring sale. So be sure to ask if they have any leftovers with discounted price.

Alberta Canada

www.lairdmowers.ca

We have the 1860 and they can cut we are on our 2nd one. Would never buy any other one. When we demoed our first one it had rained when they brought it out and the salesman said go cut....we looked at him as said your crazy he go cut. So we went and started cutting the lawn and it cut like crazy. We then tried it in some knee high grass that was still a little damp and it didnt even miss a beat. We like them because they are built from princess auto parts and NAPA, no need for a dealer to be close by, we only buy blades from the dealer. The dealer we bought it from makes a round once every few yrs, he is out of Sask. We like the front deck for ease of cleaning and going under our spruce trees, dont even have to use the weed eater as much anymore:)

LOL .......... figured somebody would catch that. Came with turf tread, I have some slope work to do and these hold better there. Running them reversed seems to be less agressive in mama's yard when turning. She don't like holes .............. ;)

Chebanse, IL.....

And I've always wondered why I just wouldn't want a steering wheel that flips easily out of the way when you want to bail off? Why does there always have to be stick? Fwd/rear could be both foot pedal & hydro lever. You could use either/or.

Why not?

If getting a hustler get the suspension seat and flex forks. I have a Hustler Z 48" deck. This replaced a garden tractor 54" deck. Mowing went from 6 hours to 2 hours with the Hustler. Most of the other zero turns are just a copy of the Hustler. They are built like a tank.

Subject: All the same

Roaming the plains
For the most part they are all the same. Commercial vs residential engines and Hydros.

Only 2 companies making hydrostats. Briggs, Kawasaki, or Kohler Engines of various design life and performance.

Then it comes down to deck design and dealer support. Very few problems should ever arise as they are simple machines.

My money would have to go to Ferris. Built just as well as anyone else and they have suspension that increases your speed, reduces wear and tear on you and the machine and is tied to the deck so you still get a good cut. My next mower will be one.

There is a lot of transition in that industry and a lot of small private companies that will go away.

Most every response here has been someone reassuring you that they bought the right one. They may have but really look at the welds, the quality of steel not just size used, the wiring, the layout of the pumps and motors. Are the pumps fan cooled? Is the seat and controls comfortable? How beefy is the front spindles and wheels? What are the gage wheels on the deck like? Overall service points.

Good luck but any commercial grade Ztr will save you lots of time.

I'll second that. I bought a Kubota ZD 331 Diesel w/72" deck last spring, very satisfied. It will take 4" grass as fast as it will drive. My first choice would have been a 31hp Diesel Ferris with four wheel suspension but it basically came down to I didn't feel $5K difference in price was worth having the suspension.

Subject: RE: Ace Reporter's report on Grasshopper and stainless bolts

Somerville, Indiana
bought a good used Grasshopper last year for $3000, 6 ft cut, its a hum dinger. Gave a little too much money for it, but Donnie gives us a lot of work so it will all turn out. He had it ready to go and has caused very little trouble during the two years we used it. I need to put a couple depth guage wheels on the outer edges of the deck to make the neighbors happy, don't know how important that is going to be yet as Debbie hasn't mentioned it yet and she takes precedence over neighbors every time.

We looked at a new Ferris too, noticed the suspension. I think the drive tires should fit an older hay wagon, about 700X15 with 5 or 6 - half inch lug bolts.

Speakin of bolts, I saw a box of stainless steel 3/4 X 5 bolts tonight at Maynerd's new store at the county seat here. $5.90 each, nothing that made much sense was stamped on the bolt head. Would that be a fairly soft bolt?
