I bought a 331 excavator today. It came with a 19" and 12" bucket. For those of you who have used the 331, what is the best size bucket for digging in black dirt and clay? Will it handle a 24" bucket?

So. IL
I think it will. Ran a 341 with a 3 foot ditch bucket and that worked great.

It will handle the 24" fine. It does not have too big of a capacity. Well matched for it.

If you put on a thumb, the 12" byucket is too narrow and will cause problems.  I have a 24" and a 36" grading bucket.(maybe 39 - I dont' remember).  The grading bucket works good on softer materials.  I used to have a 325 adn then got the 331 a year ago.  I like the cab and power over the 325.

I cleaned a 1,000 foot of grader ditch out with a 331 and a 24" bucket in 2 days. Oh how I wished I had a bigger bucket. Really like the machine though as it was a rental.

What is the weight of that machine? I have a Deere 35D, close to 8000 lbs, handles and came with 24, also have ditch bucket, 30 for sure, might be a 36, handles it OK.

That's the next size bigger than mine, you're good to go. Wish I had the long arm.

I looked at mine today.  If you add a thumb, your 12" bucket would be narrower than the pins and thumb unit.  I checked and I have a 39" grading bucket that moves a lot of dirt.
