Pricing out doors for a new shed and started looking at the bifolds. I found one company in WI and one in MN. One uses straps and one uses cables. Seems cheaper than the large overheads and I dont lose ceiling height. For those of you that have them what do you think. Thanks

Sibley county Minesota | I have the one that uses straps been a good door so far only thing I do not like is I have to hold the button for opening and shutting. My neighbor bought his from the one in Wisconson it is a lighter door than the one I have but so far he has no problems with his either and his opens and closes with out holding button. My neighbor bought his through Menards when they had a sale and they gave him the dicounted price on that also,

Trenton, KY | I was at the Machinery Show yesterday and I looked at the following brand doors, some companies had both hydraulic one piece doors as well as bi-folds. Schweiss www.schweissdoors.com Hi-Fold Door Corporation www.hi-fold.com Higher Power Hydraulic Doors www.hpdoors.com Powerlift Hydraulic Doors www.powerliftdoors.com Reasonably speaking every company when comparing the same size door was close on their price.

nw Iowa | I have 4 of the bi-fold doors from Wisc. No head room lost is a great feature!! Have not checked with them lately, but the auto lock system is great also. Push the button and walk away. With the snow we get in front of the door in some storms, I doubt the hyd. door would push that much!!! If you want look at a large hydr. door, check out the door at the Sheldon Iowa airport!!! 75' x 20'. This door came from Minn. jps

mn | Definately go with sraps. Faster and less maintinace. Also be sure to get the auto-latch system.

south east SD | I have the one out of Wisconsin, Hi-Fold Door Corp. 20 x 40 bi-fold. Will say it is a cable system, and there is moving parts! Cold storage so I don't need to open it every day. Builder was the dealer and he says he has put in a bunch at airports with no trouble. I asked about service after the sale and he said he a few little things on a new door and the company was very good to work with. Mine's only 90 days old so not much to report. The door is facing west and with a south wind it can hold it from latching in the middle. Not a big thing, I just don't open on a windy day or pull it in the middle just as it is closing. Mine has 2 remote's and a wall button. Never have to hold them to open or close. Open or close, stop anywhere you want. The price was WAY cheaper than any other door I looked at so that is why I bought it. When they say a 20 foot door, it is 20 foot opening! Hope it is working like it is now, 20 years from now! Wanted a big door to drive combine in with head, and anything else I want to park. Roll up door that size I don't think they make and sliders are not the answer. Didn't want a one piece door because I drive up hill to get out and might hit the door with something tall I might buy some day? Water runs away to the south so that is not a problem. Built the shed east to west south being down hill with a driveway being on both ends of the shed, 176 feet long. 72 foot was just added. Asked about door speed and he said they now use 220 power on electric over hydraulic. Mine opens and closes pretty fast. I know I can push the door opener and walk to a tractor, start it and drive out with no trouble. Edited by Fred 2/16/2013 12:25

SC Iowa | I have a 15x25 High-Fold with cables. Three years old with no problems so far. Only complaint is how slow it opens and closes, although you can walk away for a minute. We installed ours, not to difficult. Directions were written well. Edited by farmcorn 2/16/2013 10:35

Kenton, Ohio | my f-i-l has two of them one is 24 ft wide the other is 60 ft wide....one that is 60ft wide (schweiss door) opens and closes better than the other one that is with cables...not sure the make on it though. schweiss door has the straps and its nice and smooth. to override having to hold the button you have to call schweiss and give them your sn# for the door so they can reference the job and they will send you the wiring schematic to bypass that...its what I did for my f-i-l's 60 footer

I prefer straps instead of cables. I built these about 10 years ago. Bought the openers from Midland Bifold out of Fargo, ND. If I was going to buy a door, I would call them. Southeastern Kansas | We are wireing up a 30 ft Schwiess right now. Got to the hold the switch in all the time to go up or down. Couldn't figure our how to remedy the issue so called Schwiess. They informed us because of lawsuits you now have to install a light sensor in the system to stop from holding the switch in all the time. Would not even discuss how to wire around it. Ours has the nylon belts, much faster than the cable ones.

mn | If you want to bypass it there is a switch made that snaps in and stays. When you push one button it pops the other one out. simole way to bypass having to hold the button and the limit switch on the door will still stop it.

Sac & Story county IA | The raise - lower - stop deal is a matter of having a set of contacts on the relay to hold til the stop button is pushed. If it is a legal deal, the manufacturer probably uses a contactor that doesn't have another set not being used. Otherwise, it is the same idea as a start stop buttons on a motor with one extra switch.

SE Nebraska | We put a Schweiss in a friend's shop and wired around the hold function. Don't remember how, but it didn't take any extra parts. I think we just had to switch some wires. I'll try and remember to look at it next time I go out there.

WC MN | Get a remote for it, still have to hold the button down. Be careful what you wish for, local guy crushed by an overhead door would still be around if he'd had to hold button down.

Trenton, KY | Rockman, you did a really nice job on that door! Was that kit from Midland and you just welded it together or did you build the whole thing and then get the controls from them? My email is good, and I would like to know more if you dont mind. Thanks

Kenton, Ohio | their prewired correctly for one push button operation...all you have to do is sign a liability form from schweiss and they will tell you guys which wires to switch....its a matter of switching one wire to another terminal is all

Tip of the Thumb of Michigan | Looked at the Higher power doors at the NFMS and if you can stand to lose 8" it would be my choice. The close time on 30 footers was supposed to be about 30 seconds. http://www.hpdoors.com/

North Central Indiana | Just put in a 16X40 Higher power hydraulic door. Need an extra 6.5" on your rough opening and another 14" inside above the rough openining for the door to swing back and clear the ceiling/rafters. Price was better than OH, BF and hyd swing doors. I'll get some pics tomorrow.

Anybody that's raised kids knows it's more work to teach them how to do something than do it yourself. But then, who's gonna run things when we're done? SE Nebraska | I looked in the box tonight, but we didn't have the schematic so I couldn't tell which wires we switched. If you can post the schematic I can probably figure it out (unless they have changed the controls). I told my friend about this post, maybe he can figure out his schematic and post an answer.
