Subject: John Deere MX8 cutter problem.

Hawesville, KY
I've got a broken output shaft in the gearbox. Called JD to order new shaft, no problem for $460. Two days later I get a call from the dealer. The shaft has been discontinued, because they break too easy. I said fine, get me a new gearbox. Well, it gets worse, you see the new gearboxes are ratioed differently, so I need both gearboxes. So I ask how much that'll cost and guess what, he has more good news. Since they updated the shaft in the geabox, my stump jumpers no longer fit and I need two of them too. So for $3200 I can fix the problem. If anybody knows of a junk mx8 with a good gearbox or a salvage yard for bushhogs please let me know. And by the way, and I know it was my fault because I didn't do it, when your cuttter sits for a long period of time loosen the slip clutch and slip the clutch pads to make sure they're not seized. Just a reminder. Thanks.

I don't know if the slip clutch working would have helped you. The problem with all twin spindle cutters is when you hit an object with one side, the momentum of rotating mass from the other side gives the gearboxes a great shock load. They can't have slip clutches between the gearboxes because they are timed. By nature of what a bush hog does and the mass of rotating parts I don't think trying to time them is a good idea. For that reason I like a seven foot single spindle, and if I needed anything larger it would be a flex wing, since they have slip clutches for each gearbox. I have seen a lot of problems with twin spindle machines of all makes. The best system of protecting the gearboxes I have seen on a twin spindle is the older Woods with a square bar that was designed to twist. They held up well, they just leaked a lot.

I've taken mine to machine shop too. Machinists looked at it and immediatly said design flaw. It broke right where the snap ring went and did so because of the flat bottom. He said if the ring groove had been curved instead of a flat bottom it wouldn't have broken or would've at least been stronger.

I had the same problem whith my Mx10. I just updated the side that broke and left the other side the same. The best part is, I was gone out of town when it came in and my workers installed it and never checked the oil and ran it, so I actually did buy 2 gear boxes. I have ran it with the updated gearbox for over a year and not had any problems. I love to get screwed by deere especially on the least expensive piece of equipment on the farm. 10 years ago they would have called me before it broke and replaced all the parts free of charge. Thats what happens when companys go from a customer focused company to a stockholder focused company.
