Subject: 600+ hp JD 8960/8970

Roseglen, North Dakota
Does anyone remember a tractor 10-15 years ago (approx) as follows:
~Believe it was put together by DMI
~Believe it was JD 8960 or 8970
~Had 600+hp, thinking it had V-12 Cat
~Believe it was one the only one made.
Would be interested in picture(s), article, any info. Just curious.

I'm familiar with the (2) JD 8960's put together by Jon Kinzebaum with Cummins KTA 600 hp but can't remember details on the above. Someone told me there is a thread on Ag Talk about it, but if there is, guess I don't know how to search. Thanks.

I believe this tractor is still owned by the Dietrichs at Goodfield Il Has 3412 Cat and 2 big strait pipes. We farm in the area and have heard it beller! The engine absolutely fills the compartment! Could give you their cell # if you want it.

That was a quick response! One can't get any closer to the source than where you live. I would certainly appreciate the phone no if you don't think they will mind. Perhaps it would be best if you sent it to my e-mail. Thanks.

Chebanse, IL.....
I rode in that tractor. They were working on a friend/neighbor's farm w/it in the fall (25 yrs ago?) using a big chisel plow in the fall. If you wanted a ride, they'd take you. A DMI guy did the driving. I believe it was a prototype chisel plow they were actually testing, not the tractor. I believe they limited the gears selectable so as not to destroy the JD part of it. H.p. was not a question, they just put it in gear & it went freely. He was chiseling in some pretty heavy dirt at the time.

I think he wanted to see if he could do it. But it is a functioning 6x6 that they still farm with. That thing will pull anything you want to put behind it.

That thing is pretty cool. You have to have big equipment, because it takes a lot to get it turned around. Only steering is a crab steer axle off of a case four wheel drive. Guy who built it is extremely good at building things. Has built many pieces of equipment.
