I see HR wheat planted about Sept. 20th here in central Nebraska. Grows about 2-4 inches tall, develops somewhat of a root system. Gets cold goes dormant. I think for a min. of 6 weeks. Warms up in spring and grows/produces O.K.

Now here is the part I do not understand.

It is now Oct. 21.

High daily temp of 50 if we are blessed and night lows of 30-35 degrees and people are still planting wheat like it is going out of style. Costing around $60/acre to seed with all cost.

How can this wheat become established good enough to survive the winter compared to wheat planted on Sept 20th?

Does it simply need to sprout, barely develop any root system and then go dormant ?

I know spring wheat does not need to go dormant, but you usually have progressively better growing conditions, temp., ect. after you plant. Yes ? Not like what is going to happen to this winter wheat.

People plan on planting wheat until Nov. 1st no matter what the temp. is I think as long as the drill will go through the snow!!
