Athens, TX | I have a friend that planted Iron and Clay Cowpeas late June (East Texas), and is getting ready to cut for balage. They have held up really nice despite our drought. I think I would like to try it next year. I am planting Cereal Rye / Ryegrass for winter grazing, and plan on disking end of May, then planting peas first of June. I want to make balage end of August to first of Sept. Would it be possible to graze for a month, then pull off and make hay? Is there a companion forage that could be planted with it that is recommended? I have read that it is best to have something that is high in carbohydrates to go along with a high protein legume for it to ensile / ferment correctly. I do not want to plant anything that could have nitrate toxicity, in case it turns off dry. Thanks for any advise / responses. Chris | |
