Central Ohio | I have quite a bit of rye grain that I have been using as part of my cow mixed feed. Now I have a small herd of ewes that I would like to use it on. I read that I don’t have to grind rye for sheep and that it can be used as 100% substitute for the base feed (corn). With that in mind I think a very simple ration would be 90% rye and 10% soybean meal. I would probably add molasses to help bind the SBM to keep it from settling out. Would anyone with experience feeding sheep know if 5% molasses would be sufficient and if my protein to energy balance would be ok for ewes? Any additional thoughts would be greatly appreciated. I will not be breeding these ewes until November so my hope is to add some finish while on pasture.
Thanks for your time! | |
