Sitting here this morning thinking back to younger days. 50 years ago some of the older boys in the neighborhood got a couple of (then) old cars and cut the bodies off to make home made dune buggies. We rode those things all over and did lots of cutting up the gravel roads and pastures and chasing coyotes and such. Straight sixes with no air cleaner and exhaust straight out the manifold. They had welded on roll bars (where 3 or 4 could stand and hold on) and chicken bars and of course we eventually turned them over. How none of us got hurt I'll never know but we sure had a blast with those things. Rigged up some spot lights for night running if there wasn't a good moon. I bet Dad and Gramps wondered where all the gas went-or maybe they didn't-nothing was ever said. The older boys soon lost interest since they had driver's licenses so us younger ones kind of inherited them. They lasted a couple summers before the engines finally blew. Those town kids didn't know what fun was. Anybody else do stupid stuff like this? |
