I had these junkers killed 11/20 after 2 months and a week on all the corn I could get them to eat. It was hard because they went off feed really easy.
The pair weighed 880. They looked thin until you went to looking for signs of fat cattle. I decided they were fat, but poorly muscled and that turned out to be true.
When I dropped them off I filled out the cut card, but told the butcher to use his judgement to make chicken fry and burger If he needed to.
880 live, dressed 444# the meat is excellent. Significantly better than the certified choice angus at the grocery store. Nice clean flavor and steaks cut with a butter knife.
In summary. I was able to salvage them and turn out a high quality product. On the flip side the poor yield and it taking 2 animals to hit 880 (double kill and disposal fees) made for some fairly expensive meat in comparison to a good cow. Kinda sucks that the steaks are “diet size” also since I’m a 300# meat eater.
