Subject: chop/grind round bales?

North West IA/western AZ
I have some old soybean straw bales, 4' think, that I want to use to mulch some recent dirt work. Next spring I want to be able to plant into it without tillage(hopefully). Any ideas about grinding or chopping. I 'm afraid that if I just unroll them, there will be to much. Any ideas appreciated. Thanks
