Subject: Bale hay vs graze pasture.....

SE Wisconsin
What is the best use of my resources? I am torn between fencing in a larger part of our hay field for more pasture vs just baling the hay.

We are in Wisconsin, so we need hay over winter of course, but if we were to rotational graze our pasture, and add more land to the size of it, we wouldn't need to feed as much hay in the first place.

What calculations have you cattle guys come up with figuring baling vs grazing?

I bet jim knows :)

For some background, we own 28 acres on the home farm. It has a small 5 acre cow pasture, 20 acre hay field, and the balance the buildings. We would like to go up to 25 cows or so in the next 2-3 years. We have 12 currently.

Thanks in advance.
