Subject: Compost VS. Poultry Litter

North Central Illinois
I have been spring applying pelleted poultry litter ahead of my organic corn. Overall, I have been satisfied with the results, except for the cost and the challenges of getting it applied without causing excessive compaction in the spring. The pelleted litter is running 80-90 lbs of N per ton. I can source compost for that is running 16 lbs of N per ton for 10% the cost of the poultry litter. Essentially, I can get twice as much total N for the same cost.

So, if I apply compost in the summer after small grains harvest, how much N from the compost can I count on being available for a corn crop the following spring?
