Subject: Backgrounding calves

SW Ohio
I am in the process of buying a few 500# Baldie heifers and need some help with the best way to feed. I plan on them going to grass in the late spring, but for now they will be going in my barn. I currently have ddgs, whole corn, first cutting alfalfa/timothy (was baled very mature and stemmy due to very wet spring) and third cutting alfalfa/ timothy that was baled a little wet and is dusty. My big calves (11-1200 pounders) love it. What would be a good approach for me? Last year I fed corn and ddgs while they were on grass at about 1% body weight and it seemed like they were always fleshy, but maybe that's ok since I plan on finishing them. I was thinking maybe just first cutting hay until they can go on grass and maybe no grain until I bring them back home to finish? Or could I add a little ddgs ? Thanks for any help or opinions!
