Subject: Variable rate Sidedressing 28%

Central Michigan
I have two questions.

1) Has anyone sidedressed 28% with Y-drops with a side dress rig? We will be split applying 28 this year with a progressive 11 row side applicator. We figured we would be putting 15 - 25 gal on after the corn is up. 25 gal/acre will be going on with the strip tiller. The applicator has smooth coulters with a small thin shank that the 28 follows. We could easily put Y-drops on it and remove the coulter and shank. Are we better off putting the 28 on top of the ground next to the stalk or put it in the middle and wait for the roots to get there?

2) The applicator has a ground driven John Blue positive displacement pump I think its a 7055. Can this be set up with variable rate? Or do I need to buy a hydraulic driven pump with a flow meter. We will setting up maps and running this off the 2630 - still working this detail out.

Thanks
