N FLA | 7 for 7 so far calving heifers. 2 that took 2 days of helping the calf and Mama learn to nurse. No calving issues. I shared below I know 2 operations with 60 to 80 bred heifers and they both said they won't sell unless they can get $1800. I know I am not ready for 80, because that would be 20 calves that need you to hold mama's teat for them, by my average.
I used the Senepol bull. I like his calves. Do the calf buyers think they are too slick and tight hided? 4 were like that and three were just regular haired. I will use him again on the next heifers starting November 15th. I am still waiting on one heifer, but she could have been bred by another bull, as I moved the heifers with the main cow herd after 60 days and am at 60 days now.
Somewhere I read if you keep 15% of your cow #s as retained heifers you will have a good young herd. I try to run 80 cows on my 75 acres of winter grazing each winter and keep the best heifers. So the best heifers that ended up here, out of other people's culls cows. I have to be careful, I think this group is getting a little green and LKM is going to want to finish them out. I give them 5# of ddg per head every chance I can, but not often enough.
