Subject: clicking hard drive

Jewell County KS
Maxtor D740X-6L hard drive in an old Dell Dimension 4500s desktop, windows xp.

I went to wake up computer and it is stuck in a boot loop will not get past black screen with the "start in safe mode or start normally choices". my son got it into setup or something and drive is not found or not recognized. The drive also makes a few clicking sounds upon startup. Moved drive to a different machine and no change. From what little googling I did it appears I may have a mechanical failure in the hard drive.

What are my options ? All would really like are my cattle records that are running in Excel.

I know I know should of backed it up more often.

Anyone have any experience with the various data recovery services ? Recommendations ?

I don't know a whole lot about computers but I do have a 15 year old son.....................
