Subject: Wasp control

SW Michigan

Is anyone else having extra trouble with wasp/bee stings this year? We're a family of six and it seems like someone is getting stung every day. Yesterday it was our son--the wasp nest is in a metal pole that holds a martin house. There's a hole in it for a rope to raise and lower it and that's where they were going in and out. Today it was our daughter--she was by a rusty metal gate and when I hit the gate with a rock you could see them flying in and out of a rusted-out tube. I went over and looked under the eaves of the barn nearby and there are lots of nests.

I thought they were yellow jackets but they build paper nests like the brown wasps that have always been around. I looked online, and I think they are the second one on this page. Maybe they are more aggressive than the brown ones. Maybe this heat is making them grumpy, or they've increased in numbers enough since spring that we're finally noticing them. They certainly seem to be everywhere!

Have any of you dealt with them, and what have you done?

Thanks!
