Death comes to us all. Life's but a walking shadow | Maybe it's just here and maybe it's just coincidence but I can't help but be struck by the abrupt decline in the tropical Pacific ocean surface temperatures and the change in our local weather. We, here in the Northeast have gone from a winter that was abnomally warm relatively) & open to an April & early May that was abnomally cold & wet'ish. Meanwhile, as you can see from the following charts the Pacific has gone from "hot" to neutral to "cold". You can't help but wonder is our local weather really so determined by the surface temperature of the central Pacific?
What's interesting to me is the comparison of this year's El Nino/La Nina transition with that of 1998 (the first El Nino/La Nina for which these graphics are available). You can clearly see that we are currently just about a month ahead of 1998. And, by May 2nd that year El Nino was still in full control (red strip left of South America) but by June 2nd the transition was well under way (blue strip left of SA).
