When is the kernel size fully determined? Corn is showing one or two dented kernels per ear. Received nice rain and stalks are greening back up after three weeks without rAin. As far as test weight the kernel will gain weight until black layer I believe. Tia

This just a guess but I would say when corn reaches black layer, the kernel size is complete. The cob is shrinking even after that. But I is the kernel shrinking with drydown? Is that the invisible yield loss?

If you're after the most yield we should be harvesting at black layer. Many times I've harvested early and left a part of the field then come back later to finish and resulted in a substantial yield loss!(10-40 bushels is common) If only I had the machine and man power to get it all early!

Field shrink can be a witch.

around here corn is well into the 30 percent moisture range at black layer. dose the extra ten bushel pay for the drying.

That's a question every farmer has to answer for themselves. Outside air temp is a huge factor on drying cost with my new dryer.  Sometimes it's a bigger factor than moisture content. Drying at 70f is cheap compared to drying at 20f

Field loss is way less at a higher moisture too.  That can be 10 bpa at times.

So if it cost $0.25 to dry from 30% to 25% would 10 bu times $3.50 per bu be more net $???????????????

I agree that higher moisture corn is often easier to harvest, but I think I'd rather plant good standing genetics, spray it with dextrose sugar and late season fungicide, leave it in the field to dry, pay less propane, and trust that a Drago corn head will pick it up if it falls a bit, and a Lexion combine will take care of any phantom loss from it being too dry. I guess my only concern with it being field dried would be a tiny bit of head-shell...otherwise, the savings is all $$ in my pocket...and it is significant savings in a year like last year when propane prices were quite high.

I am not saying start at 30%.
I do want to be going by 25% but I am not paying the Coop to dry it.
