Subject: Dry beans, cover crops and no till

Sanilac Co. Michigan
This question might seem a little "off the wall" to a lot of dry edible bean growers, but here goes.

I'm not a real big dry bean grower. I don't grow them every year and when I do grow them they are just a part of my no till rotation. By and large I've followed NT soybeans with NT dry beans (Blacks), stumped them off(clipped) and have been pretty successful. The dry beans are always followed with wheat. I'm thinking now of a cover crop of cereal rye between the soybeans and the dry beans, terminating the cover in early to mid May.

Can any of you think of a reason this would not work or would be detrimental to the dry bean crop? I know volunteer rye in wheat can be a problem, but I think with no tillage and only a glyphosate burndown to kill the rye it might not be an issue. The goal is to maintain O.M. and tilth as well as hinder weeds. I'm far enough North that other cover crop options might not have enough time on the ground to be beneficial.

Anyone have experience they can share?
