Subject: Chimney repair?

Thumb of Michigan
Have a fireplace that we use on occasion- not the main source of heat. All but the last couple of feet of it are inside the house. Had it cleaned recently for the first time since we've owned the house. Chimney guy finds 6 cracked clay flues. His recommendation fix is to knock out the old flue and pour in a new flue. The quote he gave us was pretty breath taking to be honest.

So, I guess this is my question: what other options are there? Never had a fireplace before, so this a new experience.

1.He didn't seem interested in a replacement stainless liner. I'm not real sure why stainless is the replacement liner material of choice anyway?

2. Is it possible to reline with clay, or does that all happen when the chimney is being built?

3. I can simply not use it. Thats always an option I guess. I do enjoy it on bitter days, though. I generate more heat hauling wood in than I do burning it. Not necessary to keep the place warm, but I like watching a fire anyway.
