Subject: some pics-death valley

N FLA
This was the addition to the operation we put together starting in November and accelerated after obtaining addl financing in January. Death valley is our nickname and we've lost 2 out of about 60 so far in this enterprise. These cattle are currently on all bought feeds, ryegrass silage and corn screenings. Feed averiging about $1/head per day. Probably 2 weeks our supplier will be out of silage and then I have 100 or so tons of rye silage left I will go back to my own feed.

I have about 35 heavy breds and 15 open cows here. Only one pair we bought last week, other pairs were moved to ryegrass grazing. There is no bull here as they are hard on these poor cows when they come in. Next plan is to sort through here again and put open cows over with bulls. Poor doers will be sold in May. I will preg check in August and keep those that will calve by say February. Open cows sell, should catch good high summer prices. I think all the April and May calvers automatically sell at Labor day. I'm not buying anything past may calving.

I had a good argument with a friend today about him saying its a terrible time to buy cows, and me saying the returns from "managing" cows have never been better, but I did suggest yes a lot of the $2400 cows being bought may not be in the herd long enough to profit these guys renting land and paying retail for feed/labor/etc.

Quick and dirty math we are running about 120 cows. 50 here on bought feed and 70 head, (pairs) on 80 acres of rye/ryegrass with no supplement there.

Anyway. A couple pics.
$1000 pair from sale 10 days ago.
Brindle cow $1000 April Calving
8 WF $650 open cow.
161 $1300 may calving
Horns $900 march calving
51 head here. Need to move some to keep up with grazing and buy less feed.
Ryegrass we are growing to put in a bag. Money in bank and flexibility.

3 things. Cattle management, Cash management, Feed management.
