Subject: clone or image a HD?

SW Ohio
Going to attempt to revive a dead hard drive, if it works, if only for a short time, I assume I want to recover whatever I can and put it somewhere else. Do I want to clone the drive, or image it? Been reading about Clonezilla and a few other utilities found on Cnet/PCWorld etc., and Don't know which is the better choice. Would like to end up with 1. saving my personal stuff-documents-pictures etc and/or 2. having a working hard drive with all the OS stuff from my dead one. Have a new similar (same make and model but slightly different numbers) drive to put in the box but need all the software from the old one to make a usable machine.
