Subject: 1850 drill in cornstalks

new Jersey
I have been growing irrigated corn and trying to notill soybeans for one year.
Last year picked 200 bu corn and then ran turbo max to incorporate seed rye for cover
No tilled soybeans and areas with thick residue had trouble With slugs when planting with kinze 2000.

Looking at 1850 drill to use for beans and to plant cover crop in fall.
I think I need a 15 inch planter with row cleaners to do it right to get the seed covered in the soil. Or am I wrong and the drill will work and save money?
