Independence OR | This past season I participated in a winter wheat variety trial with our county extension agent. This was the first year I grew wheat in a few years so it was fun to see all of the different varieties and how they handled the different conditions. I planted this plot in the middle of the field, and each variety plot was 20 ft wide and 100ft long or so. It was planted into a worked seed bed, and I was following perennial ryegrass. I fertilized twice in the spring with 140lb of total spring. I used all liquid, and was applied with Needham streamer bars. The disease pressure was really high this season, I sprayed three times with fungicide and still had a lot of Septoria in some varieties. I am really amazed at the yield potential of these new wheat varieties. My extension agent said that we had the potential in the genetics of a few of the varieties to hit 200bu, and I really thought she was full of it, but I got close!!
