Subject: Stressing beans

Southwest Iowa
I hear this all the time. I know that there is often a yield response to beans being under some stress. But my question is why? I have never understood it but I have seen it before that it does help them yield a little better for whatever reason.
Next question is how much is too much? We've been dry for over 3 weeks and today the beans are showing signs of stress. Part of me says this is good if we get a rain in the next few days. Which there is no chance for. How long of a stressing period can they endure and under what conditions do they handle it well and yield better?

Just trying to understand more about them and why they do what they do.

Thanks for any input
