Subject: Grazing Dairy Goats

Southwest Wisconsin
I'm considering grazing my milking herd next year. My big question: does the lower milk production from grazing vs. confined feeding make up for the amount of wasted feed in a confined feeding area? I've had very good luck grazing my yearlings this summer (but we've had good moisture so plenty of feed). I've tried creating feeders that limit waste but can't come up with anything that works well. I figure my goats waste at least 20% and it doesn't matter if I'm feeding baleage or dry hay. I was thinking about doing a test group, like 24 (split from the top producers to the lowest producers) and see if it is more profitable to graze that group next year? Any thoughts/suggestions?
