South Australia | This is only my 3rd time growing corn and no one else near me grows it son I'm on my own a bit.
Corn planted into vetch cover crop at 12,000/ac.
It doesn't all look like this but in some soil types that get waterlogged in winter the corn is stunted and has the red stems.
These areas were the wettest at planting and likely the coldest. A week after planting we had a cold snap and some rain and the soil temp dropped, most areas emerged well but the areas in the photos took a fair while.
The cover in areas was very thick and there is also a big difference in growth, areas with less cover are way ahead.
Crop had 100kg or urea broadcast and 40L/ha of 9:16 in furrow with keetons, which is only 4.5 of P but on 40" rows.
I am thinking 2 things. - I need residue managers to clear a path the assist with soil warming.
- Is it P deficiency in those areas also?
It seems to be growing secondary roots.
What are your thoughts please?
Thanks, Russell
