Subject: soap dispenser problem

northwest Indiana
A few months ago my wife bought a soap dispenser at a craft show. It is a 1 pint Ball jar with a "galvanized" lid and a pump in the top. I have seen them at a lot of antique/craft/ primitive stores. The problem is, it has built up rust inside the lid and it is dripping down into the soap. I removed the pump and managed to clean the rust off with a Brillo pad and lots of hot water. Does anyone have any ideas how to keep it from recurring? I have thought about just painting it, not sure that would work and might gum up the threads on the lid. Apparently it is a common problem, I saw one in a restroom in a store that was doing the same thing.
Thanks in advance, Bob & Connie
