Subject: Cleaning up overgrown pasture questions

North Central Kansas
Several years ago, we had about 25 acres of land on our homestead that was pastured by a neighbor. He quit raising cattle, and another guy put it up for hay for a few years. For the last 30 years, this land has sat idle, and is now filled with locust and cedar trees. The soil types are excellent, it's good creekbottom land...and I've toyed with the idea of breaking it up and turning it into cropland.

With local land prices going for $3,000-4,000 per acre, I figure it is worth it to at least explore clearing this out for crop production.
Question is, what is the best way to do this? I figure a dozer would probably do the trick, but would an excavator/thumb be a better option? I will have to hire it done, as I don't have either piece of equipment. (Although, I've nearly convinced my wife that an excavator might be a good investment...)

The photo shows the piece of land in question. Am I nuts, or does this have a chance to work? And how do you suggest clearing this property up?
