Subject: Grain cart tire size?

Embarrass WI

Thinking I could use a grain cart, have never had one. Called for a price on a new one in order to be able to shop intelligently for a used one.....seems grain carts don't depreciate for some reason. Dealer is trying to sell me a new J&M 620 with 18.4-42 tires. Most used ones seem to have 24.5 or 30.5-32's.

Dug out my dog-eared Firestone book, that says that 18.4-42 has a flate plate contact surface of 330 sq in. 24.5-32 is 430 and 30.5-32 is 450. So, about a 30% difference in tire area on the ground-seems like a huge difference to me.

I called him back and told him I wasn't interested with the 18.4 tires, might be a chance with the larger ones. He's "going to get back to me".
