Subject: JD 4430 not starting: safety switch on gear shift bad

I have a JD 4430 with a quad-range. Anyways, since last summer you would have to push the inside gear shifter forward a bit and hold it there when starting- or it wouldn't turn over. I assume there is a safety switch there that only lets you start the tractor when it is in the N position. Two days ago it wouldn't turn over at all, no matter how much you messed with the gear shifter while starting it. The only thing that happens when starting it is a little relay under the dash clicks. I ended up just jumping the starter with a screw driver to start it up.

So I would assume the switch has finally went bad? How would I go about getting to it. I would assume that I could take out the dash cover where the throttle, hydraulic levers, and gear shifters are, but do the tops on these levers come off? TIA
