Subject: Engineered hardwood flooring

NE IL
Has anyone ever used an engineered hardwood floor with an HDF (fiberboard/particleboard) center core?
I have laid all kinds of engineered wood with the plywood backer board, but never the particleboard type core. It does have a thin layer of a luan-type sheet on the very bottom. Our local flooring guru has some of this on sale for pretty cheap to make room for a truckload coming in. He has installed a bunch of it and didn't have any complaints. It is installed "floating" without fasteners, just lock in place.
We're looking for a cheap hardwood for kids' bedrooms. Don't want anything too fancy since the kids will be pretty rough on them and its not in the main living areas, but I honestly don't have a very good feeling about the HDF core. Of course, my wife loves the floor(not sure if she actually likes the floor, or its price more). It will end up being about 2.50 a sq/ft out the door.
