NE Kansas | Planted millet this spring for a hay crop. Took the first cutting in July. We have been very dry all summer, and as such the regrowth was little to non until about two weeks ago. Don't expect to be able to cut it for another couple of weeks at the soonest. I was hoping to take the second cutting earlier in August and then plant oats/turnips for fall grazing.
We have had some rain lately, but not enough to put any moisture back in the soil profile. The millet isn't very prolific right now, but it is trying. I put 40 lb of N on to give it a boost, but more rain will be needed to make any good of it.
Would I be better off letting the millet go and grazing it. Or should I stick with plan A: take a second cutting and plant oats/turnips. If I do this, it will be about 4 weeks later than what I was aiming to do. Won't turn cows out till mid November.
