Northeast Colorado | Had a decent field pea crop this year. Field stayed very clean.
I understood the pea straw might have some protein in it, but little energy. I'm not a big-time cattle feeder and have limited hay knowledge--we gave it a shot and baled 100 acres worth behind the combine. It made around 120 5x6 round bales that are approx 900 lbs.
The stiff/tangly stems were an absolute bear to feed into the baler. It was slow going and clogged up between the pickup and windguard often.
Attached are two tests, The test that is drier got a heavy rain and raked a couple more times, I was curious if there was going to be a difference. They are fairly dusty from the raking and because pea harvest around here is pretty dusty anyway.
I've thrown a couple of bales in with my holstein steer calves, and they go nuts for the stuff, but they don't see a whole lot of forage anyway.
Here are results from a somewhat-local hay auction for comparison http://www.livestockexchange.org/Scan_2018_08_20_08_13_23_614.pdf
