Subject: 95 IHC 4900, air brake compressor cycles often running, hold air overnight

NW KS/ SC ID
Hey all,

We have a friend that is out from Idaho to pick up the truck we found him, a 95 IHC 4900, DT466, 7 spd, single axle straight truck with air brakes. It has an air dryer.

The truck hold air great, will hold for days at 100 PSI. But, while running, the compressor cycles often, and it seems to drain rather quickly from cut out PSI down to Cut in PSI.

Our buddy has many older trucks, and does not believe in new fangled air dryers, and wants to delete it, convinced its the problem. You can hear just a little hiss from it, but not enough to be the cause of the quick drop in PSI.

Is this a compressor governor issue, or a Air dryer issue? If its air dryer, is it usually a cheap fix? (purge valve?)

Apparently this issue has been ignored for some time, as the compressor seems pretty rattly, probably getting wore out from running all the time.

Any info appreciated,
Thanks!
