Subject: Backgrounding ration - NEm and NEg?

Humeston, IA

For those of you growing/backgrounding calves...when you formulate your rations, do you have a target Net Energy maintenance (NEm) and Net Energy gain (NEg) that you shoot for to keep them growing but not get them too fat?

I'm looking at recs put together by various sources and I'm finding one with a 70% TDN at 76 NEm and 48 NEg (dry matter basis).  Is this about right?  It does have an estimated ADG of 3.0 lbs/day, which seems high.  I've read here some guys shoot for 50 NEg, but would this make the ration too hot, especially in the younger stages?
