Subject: Right way to clamp a steel cable end?

just a tish NE of central ND
Which is the right way to clamp a loop on the end of a steel tow cable? Should the threaded ends of the u clamp bolt go on the long cable side of the loop and the smooth part of the u bolt on the short side of the loop? or threaded u bolt sticking out the short side of the loop so the sharp edges of the clamp dig into the short and the u part of the bolt on the long side??That way the smooth side would just pull the lop tighter if it slips a bit? Or should there be at least one in the opposite direction of any other one in the splice?
Clear as mud?
