Subject: Older home with plaster walls/ceilings

Michigan
I'm in charge of an elderly landlords home. The house was built in the forties and has the original slate roof and plastered walls/ceilings.Obviously with no one living there we have shut off the water and lowered the thermostat to 50 degrees.the house has been unoccupied for about 3-4 years. I've started to notice the plaster on the ceiling and other areas has started to crack and loosen.
Is it possible that having the heat turned down so low has caused it to effect the plaster?
