I woke up this morning and while making coffee looked out the window at the frost free hydrant in my front yard near my well. To my surprise it was partially on and their was a mound of ice all around it! It was not on and no ice when I came in the house last night. I had visions of having to dig the whole thing up - not fun inm freezing weather and already partially frozen ground. After some investigation, it appears a buck was rubbing on my hydrant some time overnight and lifted the lever part way, turning it on! I turned it on and off manually and the hydrant seems ok, if leaning a bit. I put a bolt through the handle so it can't be turned on accidentally anymore. When I get time I'm also going to pound in some tee posts around it so if the buck comes back he can't rub on those and can't get to the pipe. Several car/deer accidents recently. Be good when the rutting season is over. It's said to be about 3 weeks long in mid Nov around here. |
